SMARTGRID
Take Control of Your Energy.
Let Lakeland Solutions facilitate the move to grid stability, and gain control over your community’s energy distribution through advanced microgrid technology.
HOW IT WORKS
The microgrid is a self-sufficient energy system that serves a distinct area. The electricity generated through select assets is distributed to those within the grid and the microgrid can operate independently from the main power grid.
A microgrid is a local energy grid with control capability, which means it can disconnect from the traditional grid and operate autonomously (island mode). It can be a group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources within clearly defined electrical boundaries that acts as a single controllable entity with respect to the grid. A microgrid connects to the grid at a point of common coupling that maintains voltage at the same level as the main grid unless there is a problem on the grid or other reason to disconnect. A switch can separate the microgrid from the main grid automatically or manually, and it then functions as an island.
Benefits of a Microgrid
A microgrid not only provides backup for the grid in case of emergencies, but can also be used to cut costs, or connect to a local generating resource that is too small or unreliable for traditional grid use. A microgrid allows communities to be more energy independent and, in some cases, more environmentally friendly. In other parts of the world, over one billion people still lack access to electricity.
Considering natural disasters and the outages that have occurred in recent years and increasing cyber threats, many federal and provincial governments are beginning to offer grants to install infrastructure to address the need for power reliability and grid resiliency. Microgrids provide an excellent platform to keep the power on and operate critical assets over long periods of time, isolated from a damaged grid as well as to bring electricity to developing parts of the world.
